Glimmingehus is the best preserved medieval castle in the Nordic countries and a great tourist attraction if you want to experience the feeling of living in the 1500 years.
Glimmingehus is situated in the county of Österlen in Scania (Skåne) is southern Sweden, not that far from Copenhagen in Denmark ind between Ystad and Simrishamn. The great stone building remains intact, surrounded by a moat and stand up in this flat part of Swedish landscape.

Stepping over the threshold feels like stepping directly into the 16th century!
The mighty stone construction was built between 1499 and 1506 by the Danish nobleman, Jens Holgersen Ulfstand. He engaged the master mason Adam van Düren from the north of Germany.
The castle was used as a residence until the mid-16th century, after which the owner moved to more comfortable and newer housing in the grounds.

The castle was left relatively untouched and has not undergone any significant changes or modernisation. It was donated to the Swedish state in 1924 and is now managed by the National Heritage Board of Sweden (Riksantikvarieämbetet) .

Every year you can enjoy theatre plays, historical markets, jousting tournaments, narrations and music evenings at Glimmingehus. Guided showings are arranged in German and English. The museum houses findings from excavations around Glimmingehus and various exhibitions about the history of Scania.

Glimmingehus is open from Easter until September and well worth a visit for families as well as for the historic interested traveller. A restaurant and café at Glimmingehus add to the pleasant experience.
